Meet the Newest Sounders
RENTON, WASH. – The Seattle Sounders FC is now stocked with 14 players following the selection of 10 individuals during today's Major League Soccer Expansion Draft. Among the players chosen by general manager Adrian Hanauer and technical director Chris Henderson was a Northwest native and U.S. National Team member, forward Nate Jaqua (pronounced JAKE-wuh) of the Houston Dynamo. Frank Hall, a great servant of the game in Washington, recently passed away. Frank, a hall of fame recipient, was a larger than life figure in youth soccer for more than forty years, having been one of the early organizers of youth soccer in the state. He had an extraordinary commitment to youth soccer, both as an administrator and as a coach. He earned the respect and appreciation of thousands of families through several generations in Washington for his steadfast commitment to the game and, in particular, the players who made it possible. Frank has battled cancer for the past few years and was still helping to coach two young teams until earlier this month. Frisco, Texas (November 20, 2008) – Rosters are announced for the annual US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Girls Thanksgiving Interregional. Games will be played at the North Community Park and Coral Glades High School Sportsplex in Coral Springs, Fla. CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (Nov. 13, 2008) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team advanced to the championship game of the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, defeating Germany 2-1 in a classic semifinal that saw goals from forwards Vicki DiMartino and Courtney Verloo pull the USA back from a 1-0 first half deficit.
The USA will now face Korea DPR in the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Final on Nov. 16 at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland. Kickoff for the championship game is 4 p.m. local (10 p.m. ET on Nov. 15). The skillful North Koreans edged a gritty England side by a 2-1 score in the other semifinal to earn their place in the title match. FEDERAL WAY, WASHINGTON (Wednesday, November 11) – In response to the recent news that Kent-born soccer superstar and Olympian Michelle French was recently diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, Washington Youth Soccer has launched an immediate state-wide fundraiser to help her combat rising medical bills. Thanks to a donation by AIG/Pullen Insurance, Washington Youth Soccer is raffling off a once-in-a-lifetime trip for two to watch Manchester United play at Old Trafford Stadium, the team’s historic home field, with all proceeds going to French’s fight against cancer. With just a couple of weeks remaining in the collegiate soccer regular season, Seattle University junior goalkeeper Emerson DeOliveira (Normandy Park, Wash.) has the lowest goals against average among all goalies in both Division I and Division II, according to the statistical rankings released by the NCAA Tuesday, Nov. 4. DeOliveira has given up only two goals in just over 623 minutes of action for a 0.289 goals against average. FEDERAL WAY, WASHINGTON (November 4, 2008) –The Washington Youth Soccer Board of Directors is officially announcing the resignation of Mr. Todd McGann, who has been the association's full-time Executive Director, effective the 28th of October. Mr. McGann held the association's highest staff leadership position in the organization in recent years and is now pursuing a new professional direction.
