Soccer Summit

In an effort to strengthen open communication with its more than 125,000 members, Washington Youth Soccer will take its highly successful Soccer Summit forum to Kelso, WA on Saturday, May 3rd from 10 am – 4 pm. This Summit will continue a successful run of Soccer Summits held around the state since 2007, including one last weekend in Bellingham. Open free of charge to all members, the upcoming Summit will focus on Washington Youth Soccer’s largest level of play, the recreational game.

“By taking our key leadership directly to members we have discovered new and existing issues that affect every area of our state and in turn been able to make critical rule and policy changes in order to meet the best needs of our membership,” stated Washington Youth Soccer’s Executive Director/COO, Todd McGann. “These Summits are only successful when our members get involved in the process and share their voice with us.”

November 10th Spokane Soccer Summit Recap Minimize

4. Emphasis should be on Recreational

a. Keep it cheap
b. Longevity of playing age
c. Health issues for players
d. Need more information to trickle down to the coaches

  • Clubs need a voice as well as the coaches, but don’t let the coaches
    lead the battle
  • Don’t let recreational play be labeled as the feed for the Select Teams
  • Need to make sure we have a place to play for all players
  • Recreational play should be U6-U30
  • Channel between Recreation and Select
  • Change the “stigma” of recreational soccer
    1. Only good enough if you play for a Select Team

and Select/Premier. Need to treat the same

    and get it
  • A mentor system for coaches in an Association with academy style learning
  • Try mandating coach training in the lower ages
  • Look at WIAA coach training program

Clubs

  • Need help promoting recreational soccer in Tri-Cities!
  • Costs for some of the areas are a burden for the clubs (call Dave
Schumacher, Mike Margolis or Bryan Vasbinder for help in these situations)
  • Would like to have the State determine the criteria for when club and
association teams start so that they can’t be all fighting for the same players
  • Membership pass (card) needs to go to all players if they should or could be
    used for proof of registration
